What Is Swedish Massage?
A gentle, restorative massage that calms the body, eases the mind, and restores balance.

Swedish Massage, also known as Relaxation Massage, is a gentle and restorative form of massage therapy designed to calm the nervous system, reduce muscle tension, and promote overall well-being. It is one of the most widely practiced massage techniques and is ideal for stress relief, relaxation, and general wellness.
At V-Health Rehab Clinic in NW Calgary, our Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) provide Swedish massage as a personalized treatment, carefully adjusting pressure and technique to match each client’s comfort level and goals. This approach supports both physical relaxation and mental clarity, helping restore balance to the body and mind.
Key Characteristics of Swedish Massage:
Focuses on relaxation and comfort, not deep tissue work
Uses smooth, rhythmic movements to calm the body
Pressure is adjusted based on individual comfort
Encourages circulation and nervous system relaxation
The Five Classic Techniques of Swedish Massage
1. Effleurage (Gliding Strokes)
Long, flowing strokes using the palms to warm the muscles, promote circulation, and prepare the body for treatment.
2. Petrissage (Kneading)
Gentle lifting and kneading of muscles to release tension and improve blood flow.
3. Friction
Controlled circular or linear movements applied to specific areas to address muscle tightness and adhesions.
4. Tapotement (Percussion/Tapping)
Light rhythmic tapping techniques used to stimulate muscles and enhance circulation.
5. Vibration
Gentle shaking or trembling movements to encourage deep muscle relaxation, often applied to the back or shoulders.
Whether you’re recovering from daily stress, muscle stiffness, or simply need to unwind, Swedish Massage offers a gentle yet effective path to total relaxation. Our Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) at V-Health Rehab Clinic tailor each session to your comfort and goals, helping you move, feel, and live better.
